Exfoliated vermiculite has high absorption properties for decontamination ofvarious organic pollutants.

Exfoliated vermiculite has been widely used for filtration treatment of industrial and domestic wastewaters from power plants and manufacturing companies as well as for removal of oil, organic and toxic liquid spills from solid surfaces and water areas.

Exfoliated vermiculite has also beenapplied in reclamation of contaminated lands. A mixture of vermiculite and peat is applied onthe polluted area. In this case, vermiculite absorbs hydrocarbons, thus creating an environment for development of oil-oxidizing bacteria. Exfoliated vermiculite is also an air-involving, water-retaining and pH-correcting additive for the soil substrate.
